Garden of Delight
Garden of Delight
You’d be forgiven for thinking that gardens can only be furnished on a budget at the end of the season. But in fact, if you know where to look, bargains can be found year round. And with the right furniture and accessories, your garden becomes an extra room for your home. A beautiful extra room where you can relax, eat and entertain while soaking up the sunshine.
Trade Secret
Save 40-50%
One of the best discount furniture warehouses in the south, Oxfordshire-based Trade Secret carries stock usually seen in high-end stores including Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and Laura Ashley. Discounts are typically 40-50% off high street prices.
Even now, at the start of the season, they have plenty of garden furniture in stock, including teak garden tables, chairs, loungers and parasols from stylish brands such as Bramble Crest. They even have current M&S garden lines including the Riverton folding circular table with four chairs (was £375) and the Suffolk hardwood lounger (was £199), both half price.

Europe by Net
Designer pieces from £12
This website shops around in Europe for high-end furniture, then brings the results back to bargain-hunters in the UK. Discounts are up to 40% off the high street equivalent. We fell in love with the Daydream four-poster daybed by Dedon an opulent outdoor lounger hand woven from Dedon’s weatherproof Hularo fibre. At £4,366, you save over £1,500 on the normal UK retail price.

Architectural Salvage
Bargains from birdcages to buildings
The other sure fire way of finding a unique bargain for the garden is architectural salvage. It can mean travelling miles, so turn your tour of salvage yards into a fun day out and throw in a pub lunch for good measure. Plus you can now hunt for bargains online before getting in the car. Salvoweb has a directory of architectural salvage yards up and down the UK (and some overseas) plus it lists items for sale – from tiles and timber to complete disassembled buildings ready to be rebuilt. Right now, quirky garden buys on the site include everything from an ornate French bird cage to a space rocket from a funfair.

Flaming Barbecues
25% off department store prices
Even the best barbecues can be bought cheaper if you shop around online. This website buys them direct from China, bypassing the middleman. Which is how it can offer the Outback Elite Hooded 3 Burner gas barbecue (pictured, below right) at £299, while department stores charge £399. We also like the Weber Fireplace (pictured, below left), reduced to £99, an elegant way of warming the patio on a summer evening.

B & A Whelan’s
Save 2/3 on garden centre prices
Of course, go straight to the manufacturer and you’ll get the very best buys. B & A Whelan’s are the UK’s largest maker of concrete garden ornaments. They sell to the public from a three-acre yard that takes up most of a small Kent town. It’s open seven days a week, 9-5. There’s a huge stock of around 4,000 different lines including statues, fountains, sun dials and planters. Statues that would cost £150 or £200 in a garden centre cost just £65. But there’s no website and no delivery – you just have to turn up and browse.
